Emma Langridge | Margin for Error
Emma Langridge, 'Tocsin,' (detail) 2019. Enamel and acrylic on wood, 70 x 60 x 3cm

Emma Langridge uses line as an indication of surface, contour and continuity. Line implies a uniformity - denoting an equal value along its length, like that used in cartography and meteorology. Creating a striated surface allows for interference, through fracture and glitch. If the line is a signal, the break in the line becomes noise. It is this disruption which Langridge investigate through her painting practice: creating the plane, only to break it apart, the fragments dissipating and coalescing into new and ambiguous forms.

Emma was born in the U.K. and moved at a young age to Perth, where she acquired a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Western Australia. She had her first solo exhibition and entered the Holmes รก Court and Artbank collections, before relocating to Melbourne in 2001. Langridge has since held numerous solo exhibitions, and exhibited extensively in Australia, across Europe and the USA. She is profiled in the book Unfinished Journeys, and is included in the BankWest, Benalla Art Gallery, Edith Cowan University, Geelong Art Gallery and Image Archive Project (CCNOA) collections.

Emma is a Higher Degree Research Candidate, completing her Doctor of Philosphy at the ANU School of Art & Design.

Exhibition continues 1 - 14 April 2022.
